goodbye to 2010
it's official...on sunday i clicked the shutter on my camera for the last session of 2010. this has been such a fantastic, fun, emotional, and super year, and i'm so grateful to each of my clients who helped make it that way. much love and MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all!!! (don't go far, though, because i've got something exciting lined up right around the corner.)

'tis the season
gifts are being bought, presents are being wrapped. yep, it's official...the christmas season is upon us. and if you're looking for snazzy, custom-designed cards this year, i happen to know a gal who can hook you up.
i've had loads of fun (and late nights) working on christmas cards for many of you, and i look forward to lots more fun designing over the next couple of weeks (you can see the full 2010 line here and a little christmas card q&a can be found here). REMEMBER: for the sake of my sanity, orders must be placed by monday, december 13. several darlings waited until the week of christmas last year to get in touch with me and one family ordered their cards on christmas eve. no joke -- you know who you are. :-)

an announcement and a giveaway with a cause
as many of you know, our family is in the process of completing an international adoption. when we began walking this path in november 2008, we were told that we could be home with our baby boy in as early as nine months.
well..............
24 months later, and here we are -- still waiting, praying, and plodding slowly along. the caution to "expect the unexpected" has never rung truer than during our adoption journey. a major accident, emergency surgery, miles of red tape, agency hold-ups, changes in the foreign law, the death of our baby, an ill-timed second referral, more grieving and waiting...
it all leads to where i am right now. and where i am is sitting at my computer looking at a photograph of a delightfully precious face of a gorgeous baby boy -- he's our son, micah. i'm in alabama. he's waiting for us in ethiopia. last summer, i designed and sold "faith. hope. love." notecards to help raise the funds to finish that phase of our adoption. a HUGE THANKS to the many, many of you who supported us and who, in turn, will be giving new life to micah.
and now, as we have travel dates coming up in the next two or three months, i wanted to share a couple of new things with you. as you probably read in the post title, i'm going to be doing another contest this week -- a giveaway with a cause. i've been dabbling in some art design lately, and i recently printed up a handful of samples for the initial work i did, and one of you will win the set of your choice when i close the contest next week. more details in a minute...
but first, what i'm most excited about and what ties this whole thing together: if you follow my personal blog, you've seen that after judah died, we partnered with compassion international and the child survival program (CSP) they operate in addis ababa, ethiopia to support mothers and their babies both before and after birth through proper medical care, nutrition, and educational and spiritual training. the work that compassion does through the gifts of its donors literally saves and changes lives.
in memory of judah -- and in gratefulness for the many, many blessings that we've all been given -- in addition to saving for our travel expenses, i'm now setting aside a portion of the proceeds i receive from my business to give directly to the CSP in the city where our six-week-old baby lost his battle to poverty and disease. for years our family has supported a CSP in another country, but we think it's really important to try to positively affect the lives of the children in addis ababa as well. so think about it -- our work together here in this state will be making a real impact on the lives of mothers and children halfway around the world -- love it!
so what can you do? well i'm glad you asked. :-)

and the winner is......
please forgive the brevity of this post. our day started out with a huge (but fantastic!) bang this morning and i've been running around like a crazy lady ever since. as promised, though, i wanted to announce the winner of this year's christmas card giveaway....

the 2010 christmas cards are here!
it's official. the paper shop's designs are complete, the gallery is loaded, and i'm geared up for another whirlwind season of orders. yep, i'm done with the 2010 christmas card line, and i'm more excited than ever to share them with you!
now to answer some of the FAQ about the paper shop and my christmas cards:
1. what is the paper shop exactly?
the paper shop is just a sub-business of allison lewis photography. i started it a couple of years ago to design and fulfill orders for custom announcements, notecards, invitations...and christmas cards.
2. we don't have a recent session with you...can i submit my own photo to be printed on the cards?
absolutely! and not only that, but once i receive your photo, i'll do a little photoshop magic on it to get it looking as spectacular as possible. (but as a little perk for my clients, your whole order receives a 10% discount if we've worked together before.)
3. do you do your own printing? and what kind of paper do you use?
i outsource all of my printing to a company who does this all day, every day. they have machines bigger than my bedroom, and they have never let me down. they consistently produce high quality - and quick - results. in terms of what i have my cards printed on, you have a choice of three types of paper: linen, watercolor, or photo paper. cards printed on linen and watercolor have a matching design printed on the back. (how precious are my little people??) ;-)
4. do you ship orders?
i sure do. actually, about half of my orders last year came from outside the birmingham area, so the post office staff and i end up being really tight come mid-december. (priority mail shipping is $5.)
5. how long does the proofing and ordering process take?
i do all proofs by email so we can usually finalize your design within a few days at most. once i submit your order, i'll have it to you within 2 weeks tops. i'm shooting a wedding the week before christmas, so for the sake of the bride (and my own sanity), i'm going to stop taking card orders on monday, december 13th.
6. will my card look like 400 other people's cards?
nope. i do every single design in-house from scratch. i don't use templates at all, and i'm happy to change colors, wording, font, etc. to get your card exactly like you want it.
7. can you tell me a little about the pricing?
for photo paper:
i'm feeling particularly jolly this year (thanks to my new TSO CD that i started listening to when it was still 90 degrees outside), so i'm doing one of my favorites -- a GIVEAWAY! i'm going to do a contest this week in which the winner will receive a free set of 25 custom-designed christmas cards. whoo-hoo! each person will have three opportunities to win: comment, like, and tweet.
